Giveaway for In the Shadow of the Banyan

I happened to acquire an extra copy of In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner from Goodreads.  This is a lovely hardcover that isn’t available until August 7th.  So please leave a comment for your chance to win.  Here’s the synopsis:

For seven-year-old Raami, the shattering end of childhood begins with the footsteps of her father returning home in the early dawn hours bringing details of the civil war that has overwhelmed the streets of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. Soon the family’s world of carefully guarded royal privilege is swept up in the chaos of revolution and forced exodus.

Over the next four years, as she endures the deaths of family members, starvation, and brutal forced labor, Raami clings to the only remaining vestige of childhood—the mythical legends and poems told to her by her father. In a climate of systematic violence where memory is sickness and justification for execution, Raami fights for her improbable survival. Displaying the author’s extraordinary gift for language, In the Shadow of the Banyan is testament to the transcendent power of narrative and a brilliantly wrought tale of human resilience.

Good luck!

Addendum…  My apologies, I forgot to mention that the giveaway ends at Midnight on Wednesday, July 25th.  Winner will be announced on Thursday.

  4. I just read about this book in the new issue of Better Homes & Gardens and then “lucked” into seeing you are giving away a copy. 🙂 It sounds like a very interesting book and one I would love to read. 🙂 One review I read said it is “unputdownable” which is the kind of book you yearn for on the front porch late afternoons in the summer (with the ceiling fans blowing). 🙂 Thanks so much for the chance to win a copy of it. Hope you are staying cool and having a great summer. (I’m also now a follower of your blog….keep up the good work!) 🙂
